Bollywood Comes to Toronto
January 26th, 2011 by www.top-desi.comIt’s pretty much common knowledge in the US film industry that a lot of action is taking place north of the country’s border in Canada. Literally. Filming in Canada has affectionately become known as “Hollywood North.” And now it seems that Canada wants to align itself with Bollywood by hosting the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards celebration scheduled to be held in Toronto this year (slated for June 23 25). The 2011 awards will be the Academy’s 12th year of “spreading the magic of Indian cinema,” but it will be the first time the event has been held in North America (past venues have included London, Malaysia, Dubai, and Amsterdam to name a few). One can’t help but speculate at the number of dealings and negotiations that will be going on between studio executives and the like as Canada puts her best foot forward to attract the Hindi film industry much as it did the US industry. And as the IIFA points out on their website “wherever the IIFA has left its mark, it has promoted the business of Indian Cinema and provided it an impetus;” so we expect nothing less during their stay in Toronto. Award nominations for this year’s event will be announced the second week in March, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, why not start planning your trip to Toronto?
